When the 20 Formula One drivers took their positions on the grid for
the final race of the 2008 season, the battle for both the Drivers' and
the Constructors' Championships was far from over. At the same time,
the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers wanted to defend their championship
positions. "Even 90 minutes before the start, when we gathered on the
pit straight for the official driver group picture, the atmosphere was
truly electric," Nick recalls.
In the race, the BMW Sauber F1 Team driver had to settle for a midfield
position. Nick finished tenth, thereby being pipped in the battle for
World Championship points and having to leave Sao Paulo empty-handed.
Nonetheless, he was in a great position to witness the final battle for
the title at close range. "A sensational season finale that was
determined only in the final metres," said the 31-year old after the
race. "Just incredible! I'm looking forward to watching the race at
home on DVD. This season finale will certainly go down in Formula One
history."
After the race, it proved to be difficult for Nick to congratulate the
new champions - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) and Ferrari. "There was a lot
of chaos," he revealed. "But I'd like to congratulate both Lewis and
Ferrari on having won the titles!"
