- Wet conditions in the offing: According to the forecasters, the rain
probability for qualifying and the race amounts to 90 percent. The
Thursday sessions at the "Circuit de la Principauté", however, were
held in brilliant sunshine.
- 114 laps in the practice sessions: In the first practice session for
the Monaco GP, held on Thursday morning, Nick Heidfeld and Robert
Kubica were the last drivers to begin their preparation programmes.
During the course of the three hours of action, Nick completed a total
of 57 laps while Robert lapped the Principality's circuit 57 times.
Together, the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers covered a total mileage of
380,76 kilometres, in the Thursday sessions.
- Red-flagged: The red flags waved by the marshals at 10:53hrs local
time (09.53hrs BST) even surprised the teams. Robert was the one who
revealed the reason via the pit radio. At turn one, the famous Sainte
Dévote corner, a drain cover had worked loose and was lying on the
track. After a delay of 16 minutes later, while the cover was repaired,
the session resumed.
- Talk of the day: Following the strong performances delivered this
season to date, Robert is the topic of numerous conversations in the
Monaco paddock. According to the Pole, the reason for his competitive
showing is simple: "I'd consider the fact that I now have one more year
of experience and that I am working very well with my new race
engineer, Tony Cuquerella."
- Premiere for street circuits: in recent years, Monaco was the only
full street circuit on the Formula One calendar but in 2008, the
legendary race in the Principality will lose this status. In Valencia
and Singapore - two Grands Prix eagerly anticipated by both drivers and
motor racing enthusiasts - Nick and Robert also will have to prove
their skills on public roads.
