From BMW-Sauber, Congratulations Kimi!
By BMW Sauber F1 Team October 22 2007
The name of the 2007 Formula One World Champion is Kimi Räikkönen. In a thrilling final round of the season, the Finnish Ferrari driver secured his maiden title at the pinnacle of motor racing. The BMW Sauber F1 Team compliments Räikkönen on his triumph.
In the run-up to the Brazilian Grand Prix, there were three drivers who could still hope to secure the title: Lewis Hamilton (McLaren, 107 points), Fernando Alonso (McLaren, 103) and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari, 100). In the end, the driver who had the smallest number of points to his tally prior to the race was the one who claimed the title at Sao Paulo: Kimi Räikkönen.

While Räikkönen won the final round, held at the "Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace", Alonso had to settle for finishing third, and Hamilton, who had been hampered by a temporary technical problem, crossed the finish line in seventh position, behind Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.

For Räikkönen, who entered Formula One in 2001 as Sauber driver and team-mate to Nick, it is his maiden Formula One title. In the battle for the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari had already secured victory prior to the season finale.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team compliments Räikkönen and his team on having won the Formula One World Championship. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "Congratulations to Kimi Räikkönen who won the world championship title in a real thriller today."

Nick Heidfeld adds: "It's just incredible that Kimi has made it in the end," said Nick Heidfeld. "And as it was a truly unexpected success, this triumph must feel even more special for him. Great effort, Kimi. Congratulations."
